1. Am I a good candidate for cosmetic surgery?
Generally speaking if:
1. You are motivated to have surgery
2. You can set aside the time for healing
3. You have no significant health issues, and
4. You have realistic expectations.
Then You Are a Good Candidate for Surgery
2. At what age can I consider Surgery?
This all depends on the procedure performed. For instance rhinoplasty (cosmetic surgery on the nose), liposuction, breast augmentation and other body procedures are often performed in the late teens and early twenties. Conversely, most other facial procedures, including eyelid surgery, are not typically done until the mid-thirties. These are general guidelines. Dr. Massry will be more specific depending on your individual case.
3. Can surgery be covered by insurance?
Again, this all depends on the procedure. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) may be covered in those instances when the upper lids are heavy enough to reduce vision. In addition, some lid surgeries are reconstructive in nature and will be covered. Dr. Massry will provide you more information on this.
4. Is surgery painful?
It is unusual to have more than mild to moderate discomfort after surgery. If Dr. Massry feels there may be some pain after surgery, a pain medication will be prescribed.
5. How long is a typical recovery period?
In the majority of cases visible bruising and swelling after eyelid surgery will last 2-4 weeks. Normal physical activity can resume after 2 weeks. In some surgeries, like an upper blepharoplasty, people may return to work within a few days but will still have bruising and swelling. In most eyelid surgeries, taking a week off from work is reasonable. Dr. Massry will be able to elaborate on this during your consultation.
6. Is surgery done in a hospital or surgery center?
Almost all cosmetic surgery is performed in a surgery center. This makes surgery more cost efficient. On instances when overnight stay is warranted (ie. age or health issues) a hospital surgery is considered.
7. What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?
A cosmetic procedure is done for appearance only, while a reconstructive surgery has a component of medical necessity. Insurance companies will pay, at least in part, for reconstructive surgeries.
8. Can I finance my surgery?
Yes, there are financing programs and Dr. Massry’s staff can discuss this with you
9. Does surgery leave unsightly scars?
No typically. In most procedures, incisions are in hidden areas (creases, skin folds, etc.) so they are noir noticeable. On rare occasion a scar may still develop. In these instances, oral and/or injectable medications, and sometimes minor surgical revisions may be needed.
10. How long will my results last?
Surgery improves appearance and restores a more youthful look. However, it does not stop the aging process. Depending on the procedure, the results of surgery will typically last 10 – 20 years
